Tune of the Town

The Dirty Guv’nahs. Dolly Parton. The Oak Ridge Boys. 10 Years. Dave Barnes. Kenny Chesney. Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors. The list goes on and on, but what exactly do the people on this list have in common? They’re all musicians with roots planted in East Tennessee.

East Tennessee has a rich musical history, going back to the first settlers of the Great Smoky Mountains. Their distinct style of music traveled to Bristol, TN, which is now known as the Birthplace of Country Music (and has the museum to prove it!). Even one of the best college fight songs was inspired by East Tennessee. Can’t figure out which one? It’s Rocky Top! Felice and Boudleaux Bryant wrote the song in room 388 of the Gatlinburg Inn. The area has bred and inspired generations of musicians and continues to generate musical creations that all can enjoy.

Farragut is no exception to the musical talent in the area. Dave Barnes, well-known for his song “God Gave Me You”, graduated from Farragut High School! Not only is Farragut home to musicians, it is also home to several venues for live music, one of those venues being the Cotton Eyed Joe. In 2018, the Cotton Eyed Joe was named Nightclub of the Year by the ACM and has hosted stars like Chris Stapleton and Joe Nichols.

Farragut keeps the musical spirit alive year-round and has added a new event to the calendar to celebrate the talented musicians in the area. On February 21 and 23, Visit Farragut and Casual Pint – Farragut are joining together to host a Songwriters Showcase! The 21st will feature three female singer songwriters and is the perfect way to get out on a Thursday night with your girlfriends. If the first night leaves you wanting more or you’re unable to make it the first night, don’t worry! From 7-11 p.m. on the 23rd, Songwriters in the Round will take place and you can hear the music from four local singer songwriters.

This area has a vibrant musical background and continues to be home for musicians of all kinds. Do you have a favorite musician from East Tennessee? Comment below who your favorite is and why!
